Goal: Improve literacy and vocational training

GED classes are a great way to improve your education and job prospects. Whether you're looking to earn your high school equivalency diploma or just want to brush up on your skills. GED classes can help achieve your goals. The Bessie Carson Literacy Funds aims to provide resources for those seeking to obtain their GED.

Fund Guidelines:

Legal Background:
Forever Felton  is organized as a Georgia
nonprofit corporation and has been granted an exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code 501 (C) (3).  Forever Felton  is classified as a public charity.
​
Purpose: 
The Bessie Carson Literacy Fund awards scholarships to individuals ages 55 and older based on financial need and express interest in pursuing job training or employment.

Criteria and Eligibility:
The applicant eligible for assistance must attend an Adult Education Program and intend to continue job training or seek employment.  Consideration will be given based on need. Applicants should submit a scholarship application on the form provided by the Forever Felton Foundation.

Guidelines:
Scholarships will be awarded each semester.  Applicants must complete GED classes and be eligible for GED testing.

Amount:
The number and amount of the general scholarship awards granted will be determined by the Board of Directors in its sole discretion.  Each scholarship awarded will be used for one of the following needs: $184 (Entire Testing) or $20 (Sub test).  Testing fees will be paid once the student is eligible for GED testing. Applicants in need of transportation to attend GED classes may also be awarded $35 for a bus pass.

Direct Payment of funds:
All grant payments to a scholarship recipient shall be paid directly to a Qualifying Institution in which the recipient is enrolled, on the scholarship recipient’s behalf.  Forever Felton will obtain information regarding the scholarship recipients academic progress directly from the Educational Institution, and the Educational Institution will apply grant funds only for those applicants who are in good standing.

Refund of Unused Grant Funds:
Any grant funds not used for permitted expenses shall be refunded to Forever Felton.  If the terms of a scholarship grant is violated, Forever Felton shall use reasonable efforts to recover any scholarship inappropriately obtained, consistent with applicable IRS regulations.

Nondiscriminatory Selection Procedure:
The Board of Directors shall select General Scholarship recipients who, in the reasoned view of the Board of Directors, are the most deserving of scholarships based upon the criteria and eligibility described above.  The Board shall select recipients without regard to gender, race, religion, national origin, or disability.

Renewal Process:
This scholarship is not renewable.  Previous scholarship recipients can re-apply.
​​
Maintenance of Records:
Forever Felton shall maintain all records pertaining to scholarship grants applied for or paid during a year, for seven years thereafter.  These records shall include at minimum any information regarding whether the applicant used the grant for its intended purpose.
